This month we will be studying Farming. Many of the children are very intersted in farming as some of you live on farms and for those of you who don't your children are very interested in learning what their peer's lives on a farm is like. Farming lends itself to learning about animals, plants and planting, harvesting, nutrition and wear food comes from.
Here are some of the fun activities we will be doing for this theme.
Large View
Talking about sheep, making cotton ball sheep, having a weaver visit us and learning about the different types of clothes that come from sheep as well as that they are used for food.
Learning about cows and milk as well as what foods come from milk and what other types of food we get from beef, we will do "milk" painting and work with leather.
We will be studying pigs and why they like the mud, finger painting pigs and talking about the different kinds of food that come from pigs.
For Goats we will talk about both Dairy goats and Angora goats, discussing that they give us a different type of milk and that their hair can also be used to make clothes.
Horses are my favorite so we will talk about the different jobs horses can help with on a farm.
We can't forget Chickens, Ducks, Geeses and Turkeys and will talk about where they live (for instance the pond), the different kinds of eggs they lay, what feathers can be used for and that they can all be eaten.
We will be planting carrot, radish and green bean seeds so that we can watch them grow, including their roots. We will chart their size on a graph as they grow and when they are ready we will harvest and eat them.
We will be making our own bread and butter and scrambled eggs and canadian bacon for nutrition activities.
We hope that many of you will have some fun activities to add to the above list. If you do please let one of the classroom teachers know.
Fun books that we will be reading to go along with our theme are: The Farm Book by Jan Pfloong, My Big Animal Book by Roger Priddy, the Little Red Hen by Diane Muldrow, Sheep in a Jeep by Margot Apple, Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin, Farm by Elisha Cooper, Hot on the Range by R.D Jentsch, The Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown and many other fun books.
If you would like to check any of these books out to read with your child at home feel free to ask one of the teachers.
Fun Songs that we will be singing are: Down on Grandpa's Farm, Farmer in the Dell, Brown Cow, Old MacDonald, and many other fun songs. Children will be bringing home copies of lyrics to share with you so that you know what the heck they are trying to sing! That way you will also be able to sing along with them.
For our culminating event we will be visiting a local farm on ___. We would love to have you join us so please let one of the teachers know if you can come. The farm will have many of the animals we talk about available for children to observe and will have crops planted that we can observe and harvest some to bring back to the classroom.
