\pard\nowidctlpar\tab Roseburg is the county seat of Douglas County, Oregon. We are nestled in a forested region known as the 100 Valleys of the Umpqua. People come from far and wide to fish for Trout, Salmon and Bass in the Umpqua rivers. There are many beautiful opportunities for Hiking, Boating, Camping and Waterfall gazing in our region. We are also home to the beautiful Diamond Lake Resort and Crater Lake National Park as well as the Wildlife Safari Animal Park. Other areas of interest are the Museum of History and Natural History, the Umpqua Arts Museum, our Music on the Half Shell concerts which is a free outdoor concert series that runs throughout the summer and we host the NACAR Winston West series auto racing. We also have numerous wineries that can be visited on the wine tour and the Seven Feather\rquote s Gaming Casino and Resort. \par
\tab Many also come here to be seen at the Veterans Administration Hospital and we have the Mercy Cancer Center. Health industries are a major industry in our area as well as timber and wineries. There are 1,760 businesses in Roseburg that employ 20,901 employees. In 2009 the median household income was $39,787. The average sale price for homes is $166,300. \par
\tab Depending on which statistics you read the population of Douglas County was at 46,844 in the last census in 9,820 households. We are made up of 93.17% White, .22% African American, .22% Native American Indian, 3.42% Hispanic, .78& Asian and 1.18% other. Our median age is 21 years although if you ask the local residents many will say that we are turning into a retirement community at least in Roseburg and there are several beautiful retirement homes here. \par
\tab In Roseburg we have one public school district that has 9 \cf1 elementary schools, two junior highs of 6-8\super th\nosupersub  grade and one High School of 9-12\super th\nosupersub   grade. There is also several private schools including Phoenix High School for 8-12\super th\nosupersub   grade. According to 2008-09 data the elementary schools average 19 students per teacher, the Junior Highs average 18 per teacher and the High School averages 21 students per teacher although actual class sizes may be higher. There are 1,811 students at Roseburg High School alone with 91 High School teachers. The student population in the district is made up of 90% White, 5% Hispanic, 3% Asian, 2% Native Alaskan/American Indian and less than 1% African American. 35% of the students qualify for free or reduced price meals. \tab At Roseburg High school there are many opportunities for extracurricular activities. For clubs there is: German, Japanese, Spanish, (one can also take French as a class), Botany, Health Occupation Students of America, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Farmers of America, Family Career & Community Leaders of America, First Class Catering, Small Engines and Skills USA. There are opportunities to be in Band, Choir, Drama, Math Club, the Orange R newspaper, ROTC, RHS Drafting, Yearbook, Forensics and Clay. There is also ASB Leadership, Interact, Key Club, Link Crew, Partners, ASTRA, National Honor Society, Brain Bowl, Campus Life, Flag Team and Rodeo Club. \par
\tab As with most large high schools there are many opportunities for sports as well and students from Phoenix High School may participate on RHS teams. There is: Cheerleading (all 3 seasons), Football, Volleyball, Boys & Girls Soccer and Cross Country in the fall. In the winter athletes can choose between Boys and Girls Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling and Bowling. Spring sports consists of Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Golf, Track & Field and Boys and Girls Lacrosse. Students can also participate in Badminton and Bicycling. \par
\tab For students who are inclined to pursue higher academics there are college prep classes and a career center that assists students with scholarships and financial aid. The career center also holds several evening events a year aimed at giving parents information on financial aid and scholarships. There are also vocational programs available in Agriculture Science, Cosmetology, Law Enforcement, Automotive, Food Service, Child care & Child Development, Construction, Health Careers and Technology. \par
\tab For students with disabilities the options range from full inclusion, to pull out where the student spends part of their day in a typical classroom and part of their day in special education to a full day of special education. For English Language learners the options range from full inclusion to pull out for time spent with others that are learning the language. The school provides guidance counselors, tutoring, peer counselors, a school nurse and a technology center for all students. \par
\tab Prior to entering kindergarten there are many private pre-schools for parents to choose from who can afford it. There is also UCAN Head Start which is a free comprehensive pre-school for families who fall at or below the national poverty level. Head Start serve 339 families throughout the school year which consists of 8 months of 4 days a week, 3.5 hours a day. Head Start prepares children for their school experience and life by increasing the child's self image and skills. Head Start also believes that a child's ability to learn is increased by a healthy body. Head Start works to connect parents to the Oregon Health Plan to establish continuous medical and dental care for children. Head Start Family Service Educators provides families with information about services and opportunities in the community. The family service staff encourage and support parents in accepting the challenge of personal growth and development. \par
